Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What’s the difference between Natural and Conventional Golf?
A. Natural Golfers start at setup where they will naturally return through ball impact, with their arms aligned with the clubshaft on a Single Plane. This is the same theory used by engineers to build the machines used to test golf equipment because it offers the mechanical advantage of fewer moving parts and more consistent ball striking with less stress on the system.
Conventional golfers’ setup with their arms hanging more vertical from their shoulders, very clearly not aligned with the clubshaft. This means conventional golfers must use more body motion by turning or “clearing” their lead side in order to make room for the alignment of the clubshaft and arms during the swing through impact.
Because Natural Golfers start where they end up through impact, body movement and stress are minimized and consistency in ball striking is optimized.
Q. Will I lose distance using Natural Golf?
A. Absolutely not! In fact most new Natural Golfers hit the ball farther than with their previous swing because they learn to use leverage properly and strike the ball directly from the proper swing path.
This myth stemmed from a misunderstanding of how the club is held by Natural Golfers. Our 1st Fundamental was previously called the Palm Grip. This was misinterpreted by some to hold the club in the palms of both hands, holding the club that way reduced wrist angle leverage and therefore sacrificed distance. To clear any unintended misinterpretation of how we hold the club, we have renamed our 1st Fundamental to the Natural Hold, which more clearly details the alignment of the clubshaft with the trail forearm at setup, the same relationship they will swing through during impact.
Q. Will I have to change my whole swing to use Natural Golf?
A. Not by any means! Natural Golf will simplify the swing mechanics you already have by making two adjustments to your setup. The “switch” occurs easily when we you employ our less stressful power source of leverage to strike the ball. By replacing your old and inefficient power source of excessive body motion with leverage, you will find the transition is much easier than you may have thought.
This myth often stems from a misunderstanding that we are only teaching the distinctive swing of Moe Norman. Moe was an incredible individual and his swing style was unique to him. We will introduce you to the simple mechanics of a Single Plane swing and its adaptation will be unique to your body type and swing style.
Q. Does anyone on the tour use Natural Golf?
A. While the Single Plane swing concept has been around for decades, the typical model for the modern swing was developed by world class athletes and their evolving concepts of how to generate power. While the current modern swing is very productive for world class athletes, most golfers do not understand the physical effort involved in reproducing the swing mechanics it involves. Most average golfers are trying to copy world class athletics with bodies that simply won’t permit the motion.
This being said, many of the current players on tours worldwide, both male and female, are using bits and pieces of our Single Plane golf swing. Had Moe Norman been a prolific winner on the US Tour, chances are good everyone would have patterned their swing after him. It just happened that he was not, although a prolific winner in Canada, his performances were overshadowed by golfing greats such as Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and now Tiger Woods. Respect and appreciation is very evident however. Recent comments by Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh have shown that the world’s best golfers realize that Moe Norman’s single plane swing has incredible merit.
At Natural Golf, we are reaching the average golfer first with this simplicity and through this gradual improvement of the average we expect to see more conversions at the professional level. Natural Golf is positioned as the thought leader in the industry. We can change the fundamentals of your motion because we first change the fundamentals of your starting position; a Single Plane swing begins with a Single Plane Setup.
Q. Will I have to change equipment to switch to Natural Golf?
A. Equipment doesn’t make the swing happen; you can switch to the Single Plane swing with any club. However, properly fit equipment is a key component to playing your best golf and custom fit clubs allow you to optimize your Single Plane swing. While we recommend our equipment to Natural Golfers because of its benefits and personal custom fit, it is not necessary to make the switch. Simply stated, we know it will optimize your consistency and enjoyment and that is why we offer the option.
